Madras Presidency 1825 4 Pie
1825 4 Pice Madras copper coin issued by the East India Company minted by the Royal Mint, London. This coin was struck as fractions of the Madras rupee which was introduced in 1817. The obverse of this distinctive coin shows the company arms, a quartered shield (crowned Royal shield in the first quarter of the shield), and a crest of a helm with lions holding the Imperial Crown. The lion supporters, each holding a banner charged with a cross motto below on the ribbon reads, “AUSP: REGIS & SEN: ANGLIAE” (translation: under the auspices of the king and senate of England); and the date of 1825. The reverse displays an open wreath with the number 4 / value in Persian. This coin measures a little over an inch in diameter and can be found in the Krause Publications, Standard Catalogue of World Coins 1801 – 1900, KM 431.
